Phi Delta Theta
President’s Report
Brothers in the Bond, I am glad to announce that I have taken over the position of President for this coming year. I feel honored and proud that I have been given the opportunity to continue Phi Delta Theta’s good name here on the UC Berkeley campus. I recently attended the President’s Leadership Conference in St. Louis, Missouri, and although the weather was rough and cold (much the opposite of our lovely California weather), the atmosphere inside was warm and welcoming. It was an honor to be able to meet Phis from all over the nation and see what kinds of different things are going on within Phi Delt chapter houses all across the country. Much is in store for California Alpha this semester. Brothers Glicksteen, Jacoby, and Roberts, of the newly initiated Phikeia class of Fall ’09, have already taken on officer roles and are Alumni Secretary, Philanthropy Chair, and Scholarship Chair, respectively. I have much faith that they will serve the chapter well. In addition, we just inducted a new 6 person Phikeia class for the spring semester. These new Phikeia will be educated in the ways of Phi Delt and come to exemplify the cardinal principles of friendship, sound learning, and moral rectitude as the semester continues and they move deeper into their Phikeia process. Although separated by distance, we are all connected in the Bond, and the brothers here at California Alpha certainly have not forgotten that. Through frequent house study hours and participation in philanthropy events, our brothers are working harder than ever to exemplify the values of the fraternity and uphold the teachings of the Bond. I look forward to a successful semester here at the chapter, and I hope that many of our fellow alumni have the opportunity to visit the chapter house and see our boys grow into men during their college years. Yours in the Bond, Nima Rejali #1342 President

Ducks Bring Phis Together
As much as I loved Thanksgiving Dinner, I would have to say that Duck Dinner was the most memorable meal I ate in 2009. Pledges singing, old friends gathering, and brows frowning towards the sixty dollar check formed the ingredients for a fulfilling feast. We congratulated our Phi of the Year, brother Thomas Moran, and Alumnus of the Year, Adam Garfinkle, for their helpful efforts towards the house in the past year. As Alumni Chair I was very proud to see more than sixty-five alumni dining together and sharing their stories from college once again. I also enjoyed spending time with my brothers and meeting many Phis from years past. I can’t wait for next year’s Duck Dinner, and maybe this time I’ll be smart enough to order the duck and not the steak. Thank you to all of the brothers and Alumni who came to our annual Duck Dinner, I hope to see you all there again next year. Scholarship Update
One of the three cardinal principles of Phi Delta Theta is sound learning. As the new Scholarship Chair of California Alpha, I have been helping the members of our house further embrace this principle during this semester. We have been holding study nights either weekly or biweekly, an excellent time for brothers to come together and help one another in their academic endeavors. Aside from study nights, I am also beginning to collect old tests and homework from brothers to start a test bank - something that we have been unable to sustain over the past year or two. When ready for use it will be kept at the house and open to all brothers and pledges. The test bank will hopefully continue to grow as people donate more tests and become an invaluable resource to those looking for a little extra help in their studies. Finally, I have instituted a few mandatory study hours for the new Phikeia in the house. Even though it is only an hour a couple of nights a week, it has been an excellent time not only to study, but also for the new pledge class to bond with each other. With these measures in place, hopefully this house can continue its strong academic record. Yours in the Bond, Nathan Roberts # 1349 Scholarship Chair

It’s a Long and Winding Road to Brotherhood
At the beginning of the 2009 fall semester, I did not have much desire to join a fraternity. I was hanging out at Phi Delta Theta in order to see my friend from high school, brother Jake Toy. I was unaware that I was being considered for a bid but when it was offered I decided to give it a try. I had had s ome v ery pl eas a nt conversations with several brothers in the house and wished to get to know them better. Even right before I was inducted I still had some reservations about the house and I wondered whether it was the right place for me. But as the pledge events began and I started to talk to more brothers, I felt completely satisfied with my decision to join. Together, my pledge brothers Mark Glicksteen, Corey Jacoby, Nathan Roberts, Aditya Gupta and I formed a very supportive group and we be c a me v e r y bond e d throughout the semester. Brother Mike Wright, our Phikeia educator, taught us all the core values inherent in being a Phi in a fun and sincere manner. But it was after spending considerable time with the community of brothers that I truly learned the importance of brotherly friendship and felt genuinely fortunate to be given the opportunity to join the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. San Francisco Alumni Club
The SF Alumni Club holds a luncheon on the first Friday of every month. Lunch is served at the famous Schroeder's Restaurant, which is located at 240 Front St. in downtown San Francisco. The lunch is informal and begins at noon. Alumni are encouraged to attend. The next one will be on March 5th.
New Kids on the Block
The induction of six new pledges into our Fraternity for spring 2010 completes another successful rush here at California Alpha. Max, Noel, Sam, Cody, Frank, and Serban are all awesome guys and their personalities mesh very well with the principles on which this Fraternity is built. As always, our BBQs, evening socials, and on-campus recruiting efforts not only attracted new people to the house, but also brought the brothers closer together. One of the best events was our hookah and kabobs night, which was really laid back and gave the new guys a chance to meet all the brothers. We did things a little bit differently this semester, with Matt Mueller splitting the duties of Rush Chairman with me. This approach allowed us to better meet potentials and made the coordination of events easier. I am looking forward to seeing our new inductees grow into worthy brothers of Phi Delta Theta over the coming pledge semester under the leadership of Phikeia Educator, Mike Wright, and I am sure that they will take their place as leaders of our chapter in the future. Phi-lanthropic Endeavors
One of the many responsibilities a Fraternity has in the university setting is that of community service and philanthropy. During the last semester, the men of California Alpha participated in several philanthropy events sponsored by other Greek chapters. The Delta Delta Delta sorority hosted a pancake breakfast to benefit the St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and eight brothers purchased tickets to eat pancakes and support the cause. Additionally, Phi Delta Theta put forth a team to participate in Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority’s semi-annual dodge ball tournament which benefits the CASA foundation, an organization working to support neglected children. Although the Phi Delta Theta team did not win the entire This year the fraternity is planning to participate in several philanthropy events and is hosting one itself. Phi Delta Theta is planning to coordinate with the rest of the Greek institutions at UC Berkeley in order to organize a “Southside Cleanup.” The hope is to involve members from every fraternity and sorority in picking up trash and improving the Berkeley Southside neighborhood, where most of the institutions have charter houses. We feel it is in our best interest, as well as the community’s, to have a trash-free and clean home to share.

Home Improvement
“Over Winter break a brand new linoleum floor was put in to replace the old one which was falling apart.”
We are well into the Spring 2010 semester and the Phi Delta Theta California Alpha house is looking better than ever. Our kitchen has had the most exciting changes and improvements so far. The first thing to go was the center island. It was very old and the grout and tiles were falling off the top. It was demolished by our own Phi Delt brothers and a brand new stainless steel table was put in its place. The center area is now mobile, easy to clean and provides much more space for cooking. Next on the chopping block was our stove. A brand new Wolf industrial stainless grill and
stove top was installed in its place, a much needed improvement. And finally there is the new kitchen floor. Over Winter break a brand new linoleum floor was put in to replace the old one which was falling apart. Many other improvements have been made to the house like fire alarm covers and a full repaint of the dining room and foyer by our Fall 2009 Phikeia. All of this could not have happened without the dedication of alumnus Adam Garfinkle. He puts many hours into the house, helping with all the improvements. He is a real asset to the house and the brothers of Cal Alpha really
appreciate his help. There is much more that needs to be done at the California Alpha house, however. We need a new deck door and a side gate for better security. Any and all donations would be much appreciated and be put to excellent use. Please help us keep the California Alpha house a proud symbol to all its members and guests. Yours in the Bond, Garrett Edell #1332 House Manager
